I’ve worked at this big company for over fifteen years now. The other day, I was in the gym at work, and the fire alarm went off. We had to evacuate the building.
It was a fairly cold February morning. And everyone was huddling around talking about stuff. There were a few acquaintances that I’d known for a while out there, but I just didn’t feel like making the effort to go talk to them. I stood by myself contemplating whether I had lost my social skills. That’s when I realized a couple of things — I’m not looking to make friends (especially at work). And I was happy being by myself instead of shooting the breeze.
I must be getting old.
